The calipers are compressed with a C clamp. The calipers squeeze the pads against the disk when you apply the brakes. The new pads are thicker than the worn out pads, so the calipers must be opened wider to go over the disk. The petal just about goes to the floor with the first press of the brakes after the disk brake job. The brakes have to be pumped to push the calipers out again. They are fine after that, unless there is a leak in the brake fluid line somewhere.
